I stumbled into politics many years ago now, all the way back in 2013. I was bored and unfulfilled in my music industry job and trying to find a career path that would allow me to use my skills and help people in some kind of big, meaningful way.
I started working on the side for a 2nd Amendment group in Tennessee and quickly became aghast at all of the governmental abuse I discovered. The world of activism opened up to me, but I had a problem. As I was speaking to Republican groups across the state I quickly found that many espoused views I did not hold and that were not limited government or individual liberty values - the values I had been raised to believe in.
I had an identity crisis on my hands, and so I went looking for tools and information that would help me better define who I am and what I believe in. I was fortuitously given a copy of The Law by Frederic Bastiat by the director of the 2nd Amendment group, and it opened up the world of free market economics to me. I began looking for other economists and writers in this vein and quickly found myself spending hours and hours on the website of an organization, The Foundation for Economic Education (FEE).
FEE’s writers had a way of making economics simple and applicable to every day life and policies. I came to see that in many ways, economics is a study of people and praxeology, rather than merely of numbers and graphs. Beyond that, FEE married my economics education to an understanding of the personal responsibility that is so intrinsic to liberty. Through this input, and that of some others, I was able to develop my foundational principles - a worldview with a guiding set of rules by which to apply it.
Those principles have seen me through some tumultuous years in politics. They’ve allowed me to stand firmly and boldly on what I know to be true, without concern for the winds of popularity, the movements of the masses, or the quickly changing beliefs of major political parties.
As you can see, FEE has been very near and dear to my heart for some time. And so I am beyond thrilled to announce that I have accepted a full-time role with the organization!
In my new position, I will serve as FEE’s Content Manager and Brand Ambassador. You’ll find me representing the organization and our Freedom Philosophy in the media, at events, conferences, and online. I will have the opportunity to increase my writing output and create other new media to reach a younger generation with free market ideas - and the humane values and ethical principles that go along with them. I’ll be hosting a weekly show and a new daily podcast with my friend and colleague, Brad Polumbo. I’ll also oversee our recently launched Hazlitt Project (along with other special projects). The Hazlitt Project is an exciting new venture where we will hire aspiring journalists and liberty influencers for apprenticeships, teach them the tools of the trade, and turn them out into the world to effect change.
FEE was founded by philosophical giant Leonard E. Read, and its hallways have been graced by the likes of economists like Henry Hazlitt, Ludwig von Mises, and Friedrich Hayek. The chance to stand on the shoulders of these giants and preach the message of the Freedom Philosophy is honestly something that was beyond my wildest dreams even a year ago, and I’m consistently humbled by the doors God opens in my life.
The past (nearly) three years with Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty has been a gift. I’m really proud of what we accomplished during that time. Three more states have overturned the death penalty, Ohio is on the verge, and close to 60 Republicans have sponsored repeal bill across ten states since 2019. I want to thank Equal Justice USA for the incredible years they’ve given me. I’ve been immensely supported there and it allowed my work to flourish. I remain dedicated to transforming the justice system and will continue to use my voice to elevate these issues.
I’m thrilled to begin this new journey, and hope you all will assist me in spreading FEE’s message far and wide. Victor Hugo said, “No force on earth can stop an idea whose time has come.” Our time is now. May we meet it.
This new opportunity, the new chapter in life that God is writing for you and these words of yours here are all
